Milk may be the perfect food for infants. But for millions of older kids and adults, it can call painful attention to one of the body's imperfections - a shortage of lactase, the enzyme necessary to digest the lactose in dairy products.
According to the National Digestive Diseases Clearinghouse, between 30 million and 50 million Americans lack the enzyme and suffer from lactose intolerance.
While lactose intolerance is not dangerous, it can be extremely uncomfortable. Symptoms include nausea, cramps, painful gas, bloating and even diarrhea. The problems usually develop an hour or two after consuming milk or dairy products.
Dietitians say there are many foods that are packed with calcium but contain no lactose.
For instance, NuVim, a supplemental drink made from milk produced by hyperimmunized New Zealand cows, provides the benefits of dairy but contains no lactose. It is low in calories, carbohydrates and sugar.
The drink, which is available in a variety of fruit flavors, can be found in the refrigerated sections of many supermarkets and convenience stores. For additional health benefits, it contains the patented micronutrients MunePro, which enhances the functioning of the immune system, and Accuflex, which helps maintain healthy joints and muscles. |
