The tale is revealed from the viewpoint of the main character, 13 year old Joey Mills - a child of divorced parents. His mother has a restless electrician boyfriend, Pete, and they are having relationship difficulties. Apparently, Pete has a problem telling the truth and has a compulsion to steal. Despite these faults, Joey likes Pete because he treats him like a friend. While yearning for his father and some form of stability, Joey has some minor drug and sexual experiences during a surprise trip to New Mexico in Pete's RV. He learns to see his mother as a human being, with flaws and needs, and comes to understand his parent's divorce. In turn, the parents learn to make better choices and strive to get along.
