Hearing Aids: Can You Hear Me Now? If Not Try This

Author: Lerner De Luca

We live in a world where it pays to be generally civic and thoughtful of ours both in our personal and professional lives. Case in point is with the growing number of individuals who have experienced hard of hearing as a result of the natural processes of growing older or because of blasting their music too loud during those college days. Too bad.

Well instead of getting into potentially awkward and counterproductive scenarios when you are working with someone who is hard of hearing, consider the following key points:

1. Be a better communicator. Do not change the topic mid sentence of the person you are speaking to whether at the table or while walking. If you must change the topic be sure to signal and steer the conversation that way or else there will be lots of confusion between both parties.

2. Try to change up the pitch of your voice and get a feel for what the listener may be better at processing.

3. If asked to repeat a sentence or thought, do so again slowly and clearly.

4. In general it is better to speak more slowly and deliberately than being too fast.

5. Feel free to spell out certain words in case the person confuses it for something else.

6. Speak directly towards the person with hearing problems.

By following these suggestions and being thoughtful in general, you will create a much more harmonious work and personal environment.
