Private Space Flight to Get Regulations

Author: Lance Winslow

The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed many new regulations for Space Flight to supposedly protect the people. Apparently the FAA has some greater ambitions to regulate the entire Galaxy and then the Universe. Perhaps they are just getting warmed up to be the Inter-galactic Regulatory Agency of all 13-dimensions of the Space Time Continuum? And if so, no one should be surprise.

With the incredible success of Burt Rutan with SpaceShip One we see some 38,000 people who have paid deposits to get onto the waiting list to go into space for about $200,000 a pop. It seems a shame that the FAA chooses to regulate a fledgling industry so soon, before they even know if there will be any problems. Ronald Reagan once said:

"If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it, and if it stops moving, subsidize it!"

A wise statement indeed. My question would be are we moving toward subsidizing the privatization and commercialization of space as the next brilliant move by the FAA? We cannot put anything past them considering their past destruction of the general aviation industry in our country as they turned most of it over to the lawyers who sued many companies out of business, based on the rules and regulations that FAA created and paperized. Think on this in 2006.
